iOS and Android
Color Blind Pal for iOS and Android helps people who are color blind see the colors around them. It also lets people with normal vision see what it's like to be color blind.
Want to know what color something is? Now you don't need to ask a friend - just open the app to get a descriptive name, like 'bold brown'.
Want to see all colors more clearly? Use the app to shift colors that are hard to distinguish toward colors you can easily distinguish. It'll be as easy for you to spot an orange pumpkin in a green field as it is for everyone else. Or, do you have normal color vision and want to know what someone who's color blind sees? The app can also simulate any type of color blindness.
Simply open the app and point your device's camera at what you want to see! If someone gives you a green form and a yellow form and asks you to fill out the green one, open the color inspector to tell which is which. If you're struggling to read a color-coded map, use the color filter to make the colors easy to distinguish.

Mac
Color Blind Pal for Mac allows people with color blindness or color deficiency to see the colors on their screen more clearly. It also lets developers see what their screen looks like to someone who is color blind.
The Color Selector feature shows the color at your cursor, including a descriptive name like 'faint green'. It tells you what the color's hue, saturation, and value are, so you'll know exactly what the difference is between, for example, 'teal' and 'cyan'.
The Color Window feature isolates a color of your choosing so you can see what parts of your screen are that color. For instance, you can look at a picture of a sunset through the Color Window and cycle the selected color from purple to yellow to see exactly what colors are where. You can use the Shift feature to change the hues that are harder for you to differentiate to easier colors, based on the color blindness type you select.
You can easily open and close the Color Selector and the Color Window with keyboard shortcuts or a menu bar icon.
With Color Blind Pal, you can easily do the following and more:
- Find out exactly what any color is
- See all the colors in any image
- Read any color-coded map, chart, or graph
- Pass a color vision test (it turns out there really are numbers in those dots!)
But wait, there's more! Enjoy these powerful features too.
The Stripes feature in the Color Window draws a striped pattern on selected colors, like red. This feature makes it natural to see whether a color is red or green while still preserving the actual color.
The Color Portal lets you apply the Color Window to your whole screen while still directly interacting with the windows behind it. Never work without color vision again!
The customization features let you personalize Color Blind Pal. You can turn on developer color codes for the Color Selector, change the color names to 'scientific' or 'colloquial' with different color name packs, set your own keyboard shortcuts, and customize the Color Window toolbar.

Youcan designate colors as either spot or process color types, whichcorrespond to the two main ink types used in commercial printing. In the Swatches panel, you can identify the color type of a colorusing icons that appear next to the name of the color.

When applying color to paths and frames, keep in mind the finalmedium in which the artwork will be published, so that you applycolor using the most appropriate color mode.
Note:
If your color workflow involves transferringdocuments among devices, you may want to use a color-managementsystem (CMS) to help maintain and regulate colors throughout theprocess.
A spot color is a specialpremixed ink that is used instead of, or in addition to, processinks, and that requires its own printing plate on a printing press.Use spot color when few colors are specified and color accuracyis critical. Spot color inks can accurately reproduce colors thatare outside the gamut of process colors. However, the exact appearanceof the printed spot color is determined by the combination of theink as mixed by the commercial printer and the paper it’s printedon, not by color values you specify or by color management. Whenyou specify spot color values, you’re describing the simulated appearanceof the color for your monitor and composite printer only (subjectto the gamut limitations of those devices).
Keep the following guidelines in mind when specifying a spotcolor:
- For best results in printed documents, specify a spotcolor from a color-matching system supported by your commercialprinter. Several color-matching system libraries are included withthe software.
- Minimize the number of spot colors you use. Each spot coloryou create will generate an additional spot color printing platefor a printing press, increasing your printing costs. If you thinkyou might require more than four colors, consider printing yourdocument using process colors.
- If an object containsspot colors and overlaps another object containing transparency, undesirable results may occur when exporting to EPS format, when convertingspot colors to process colors using the Print dialog box,or when creating color separations in an application otherthan Illustrator or InDesign. For best results, use the FlattenerPreview or the Separations Preview to soft proof the effects offlattening transparency before printing. In addition, you can convertthe spot colors to process colors by using the Ink Manager in InDesignbefore printing or exporting.
- You can use a spot color printing plate to apply a varnishover areas of a process color job. In this case, your print jobwould use a total of five inks—four process inks and one spot varnish. Todo app mac the verge.

A process color isprinted using a combination of the four standard process inks: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK). Use process colors when a jobrequires so many colors that using individual spot inks would beexpensive or impractical, as when printing color photographs.
Keep the following guidelines in mind when specifying a processcolor:
- For best results in a high-quality printed document, specify process colors using CMYK values printed in process colorreference charts, such as those available from a commercial printer.
- The final color values of a process color are its valuesin CMYK, so if you specify a process color using RGB (or LAB, inInDesign), those color values will be converted to CMYK when youprint color separations. These conversions differ based on yourcolor-management settings and document profile.
- Don’t specify a process color based on how it looks on yourmonitor, unless you are sure you have set up a color-managementsystem properly, and you understand its limitations for previewingcolor.
- Avoid using process colors in documents intended for onlineviewing only, because CMYK has a smaller color gamut than that ofa typical monitor.
- Illustrator and InDesign let you specify a process coloras either global or non-global. In Illustrator, global process colorsremain linked to a swatch in the Swatches panel, so that if youmodify the swatch of a global process color, all objects using thatcolor are updated. Non-global process colors do not automaticallyupdate throughout the document when the color is edited. Processcolors are non-global by default. In InDesign, when you apply aswatch to objects, the swatch is automatically applied as a globalprocess color. Non-global swatches are unnamed colors, which youcan edit in the Color panel.
Note:
Global and non-global process colors only affect how a particularcolor is applied to objects, never how colors separate or behavewhen you move them between applications.

Sometimes it’spractical to use process and spot inks in the same job. For example, you might use one spot ink to print the exact color of a companylogo on the same pages of an annual report where photographs arereproduced using process color. You can also use a spot color printingplate to apply a varnish over areas of a process color job. In bothcases, your print job would use a total of five inks—four processinks and one spot ink or varnish.
In InDesign, you can mix process and spot colors together tocreate mixed ink colors.
Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator use slightly differentmethods for applying named colors. Illustrator lets you specifya named color as either global or nonglobal, and InDesign treatsall unnamed colors as nonglobal, process colors.
TheInDesign equivalents to global colors are swatches.Swatches make it easier to modify color schemes without having tolocate and adjust each individual object. This is especially usefulin standardized, production-driven documents like magazines. BecauseInDesign colors are linked to swatches in the Swatches panel, anychange to a swatch affects all objects to which a color is applied.
The InDesign equivalents to nonglobal swatches are unnamed colors.Unnamed colors do not appear in the Swatches panel, and they donot automatically update throughout the document when the coloris edited in the Color panel. You can, however, add an unnamed colorto the Swatches panel later.
Named and unnamed colors only affect how a particular color updatesin your document, never how colors separate or behave when you movethem between applications.
